Location: Site-specific video projection at the Holy Trinity Parish Church
'Like the rest of the Churches of the East Riding, there is scarcely any ancient glass to be found in Holy Trinity. Most of the medieval glass has perished over time or was destroyed during a zeppelin raid in the First World War… There are some very fine 15th and 16th Century roundels in the Vicar's Vestry which indicates that before the reformation there may have been a substantial quantity of medieval stained glass' http://www.holy-trinity.org.uk
The empty or clear glass windows of the Church that were once filled with stained glass inspired the artist to come up with a contemporary, yet nostalgic impression to fill the glass panes with.
This site specific installation in the church exists of a video projection on one of the windows of the Holy Trinity Church, projecting from inside the church, so that at night an artificial stained glass window can be seen when observing the church from outside. To make a projection from inside the church is in a way to reverse the concept of stained glass. Where normally the images appear in the day when it is sunny, with this installation passers-by will be surprised at night with artificial light coming from inside the church.
Doina Kraal (1980, Breukelen), The Netherlands. Lives and works in Amsterdam
Doina graduated from the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam in 2002, where she studied at the department fine art and new media (v.a.v.). After her studies in Amsterdam she did a Masters in Fine Art at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London.
By making installations and site-specific pieces, Doina creates an ephemeral world for the viewer to step into. The media she uses are often sources of light; film-, video- and slide-projections, artificial or natural light or photographs, often combined with sculpture and sound.
The challenges that site-specific sites present and more specifically those within public spaces inspire her. Her ideas often present her with obstacles that are apparently insurmountable, however for her they are the realization of seemingly impossible dreams.
This work was made possible with the support of Vlaams Cultuurhuis De Brakke Grond Amsterdam.
