Hull has for the past decade been my hometown. During this time I have come to know and love the disparate architecture that make up the city - be it from over-eager, post-war rebuilding, or random designers getting briefs to make buildings 'fit' into existing schemes, to sites of seemingly forgotten ruins - the overall picture is one of chance and haphazard abandon.

This may not be the public opinion, but in an effort to extend the 'if-you-look-up-at-buildings-you'll see-a-whole-new-city' idea, and make the viewer take in the fullness of Hull's architectural history, I have chosen to give certain buildings the status of artworks, with the Cityscape itself being the Gallery, and as anyone who has been to a gallery will have experienced; artworks need a title label; that ubiquitous little foam-board piece that sits next to any and every piece of art in any 'proper' gallery in the world, clearly stating who/what/when/where; providing the work with an identity, and the audience with a spoonful of perceived, second-hand, knowledge to make them feel they 'understand' the work; demystification of the lowest possible denominator.

These title labels will describe the buildings of my choice, as I choose to describe them - it may be accurate, and it may not…it is in the minds of the audience that this piece is verified and becomes true.

Espen Jensen has for the past decade performed and exhibited extensively across the UK and Europe, predominantly through the medium of sound. He has recorded and released material as Elektrodiesel, Livet Er Smerte, US, Rhythm & Noise. In addition to this, he has to date published two collections of short stories and poetry.

Espen has also worked extensively as a programmer and curator with organisations such as RED Gallery, Hull Time Based Arts, HART01, The Kingston Rowing Club, The New Adelphi Club and Safe As Milk.

In 2004 he founded Hull Art Lab, which, until its untimely end in late '06, was the only large scale commissioning body for contemporary art in Hull.
